Mobile Health Camp at Somanathapura Village

On the 9th of December 2012, Trinity Care Foundation conducted a Free Mobile Health camp in Somanathapura Village Government School in Bagepalli Taluk, Chickaballapura District, Karnataka, India. 

This medical camp aimed at providing basic healthcare services focusing on Orthopedics, Gynaecology, Dermatology, Diabetology, Cardiology, Dentistry, Pediatrics & Ophthalmology. Basic Medicines were provided free of cost.

The Organization worked in conjunction with government health officials, Gram Panchayath Members and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, HAL members in order to organize this event.

Health Workers from villages were directed in advance to escort patients to this camp. In order to spread the word about the camp, the foundation organized press releases in local newspapers and also put up advertisement posters in and around the village. Additionally local help was taken to cover the event.

A team of 36, including 18 Doctors as well as observers from HAL, Bangalore, set out from Bangalore early in the morning and arrived at Somanathapura Government School, the site of the camp at around 10:00 am. The Village is 148 Kilometers from Bangalore City towards Devanahalli.

Once there, the team began examining patients – who consisted mostly of young children and Adults – to determine the extent of their problems and decide on a possible course of action to correct these problems. Patients were examined by our team of doctors. 

The team distributed Medicines, conducted GRBS Tests and provided Dental Treatments on the Mobile Dental Unit. Around Six Hundred people were examined for various problems. The doctors explained to each patient – and in many cases, parents and other relatives of these patients as well – exactly what procedures needed to be done to cure them. While the team had anticipated a problem in convincing patients of the need for surgery, there did not appear to be any such issue. 

Each person examined was given a diagnosis and a prescription sheet, and some patients were also asked to come into Bangalore for surgeries on a given date.

The camp closed at 3:30 pm, after every single patient had been observed. Fluoride is the main cause in Bagepalli Taluk. Problems caused by fluoride include Dental Fluorosis - a disease of the teeth, weakening of bones and bone loss, bone cancer, kidney problems and hormone disruption.

Patients who require surgery will be treated at hospitals in Bangalore in the near future.

Trinity Care Foundation hopes to build on its successes by organizing such camps soon. This Mobile Health Camp was conducted for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bangalore as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiative focusing on Community Health.

The Companies Bill, 2012

The Lok Sabha on Tuesday 18th December 2012 gave its approval for the Companies Bill 2011, paving the way for a new modern company law.

The proposed legislation will replace the existing Companies Act 1956, which was enacted 56 years ago. The Companies Bill 2012 was passed by a voice vote in Lok Sabha in a marathon late night sitting. Besides making independent directors more accountable and improving the corporate governance practices, the Bill seeks to make corporate social responsibility mandatory for certain companies.

The Companies Bill proposes that profit-making companies that meet certain conditions will be required to set aside 2 per cent of the net profit towards CSR. Mr. Sachin Pilot, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs  said India would become the first country to mandate corporate social responsibility (CSR) through a statutory provision. “While framing rules for the legislation, the government will take in to confidence MPs and other stakeholders, like NGOs. It’s an evolving idea. We will make compliance easy,” he said.

Under the new legislation, companies will be encouraged to create employees’ welfare fund. “Severity of law is not deterrent; it is surety which is deterrent. The companies may engage in promoting education, reducing child mortality and any other matter they feel can contribute for social welfare,” he added. Under the new law, the CSR spending would be the responsibility of companies like their tax liabilities. The Bill, with 470 clauses, seeks to make CSR spending compulsory for companies that meet certain criteria. Firms having Rs.5 crore or more profits in the last three years have to spend on CSR activities. One of the major proposals is that companies have to mandatorily spend 2 per cent of their average net profit for CSR activities. The changes, once in place, would amend the Companies Law that has been in force since 1956.

Cleft Lip and Palate

Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects that affect the upper lip and roof of the mouth. They happen when the tissue that forms the roof of the mouth and upper lip don't join before birth. The problem can range from a small notch in the lip to a groove that runs into the roof of the mouth and nose. This can affect the way the child's face looks. It can also lead to problems with eating, talking and ear infections.

Treatment usually is surgery to close the lip and palate. Doctors often do this surgery in several stages. Usually the first surgery is during the baby's first year. With treatment, most children with cleft lip or palate do well.

Outreach Health Program in Channapatna Hospital

On the 28^th of July 2012, the Trinity Care Foundation conducted a free medical camp in the government hospital in Channapatna, Karnataka. This medical camp aimed at identifying patients from the region with facial deformities who required surgical procedures to rectify them.

Trinity Care Foundation worked in conjunction with government health officials in order to organize this event. Health Workers from villages in the district were directed in advance to escort patients with facial deformities to this camp. In order to spread the word about the camp, the foundation organized press releases in local newspapers and also put up advertisement posters in and around the town.  Additionally, a regional TV network was asked to cover the event itself.

Consultation

A team of 11, including doctors as well as interested observers from other organizations, set out from Bangalore early in the morning and arrived at Channapatna hospital, the site of the camp at around 10:45 am.

Once there, the team began examining patients – who consisted mostly of young children and middle aged adults – to determine the extent of their deformities and decide on a possible course of action to correct these problems. These patients, led by their Health workers attended the camp after travelling from villages as distant as 60 km from the hospital.

The team distributed toys – like plastic flutes, rubber pencils and even colouring books – as well as candies among the patients to help them feel comfortable during the process of examination. Nearly twenty people were examined for facial deformities, which included cleft lip and palate problems, misaligned parts and even locked jaws. The doctors explained to each patient – and in many cases, parents and other relatives of these patients as well – exactly what procedures needed to be done to cure them of their deformities. While the team had anticipated a problem in convincing patients of the need for surgery, there did not appear to be any such issue. Each person examined was given a diagnosis and a prescription sheet, and some patients were also asked to come into Bangalore for a surgery on a given date.
