Mobile Health Camp at Somanathapura Village

On the 9th of December 2012, Trinity Care Foundation conducted a Free Mobile Health camp in Somanathapura Village Government School in Bagepalli Taluk, Chickaballapura District, Karnataka, India. 

This medical camp aimed at providing basic healthcare services focusing on Orthopedics, Gynaecology, Dermatology, Diabetology, Cardiology, Dentistry, Pediatrics & Ophthalmology. Basic Medicines were provided free of cost.

The Organization worked in conjunction with government health officials, Gram Panchayath Members and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, HAL members in order to organize this event.

Health Workers from villages were directed in advance to escort patients to this camp. In order to spread the word about the camp, the foundation organized press releases in local newspapers and also put up advertisement posters in and around the village. Additionally local help was taken to cover the event.

A team of 36, including 18 Doctors as well as observers from HAL, Bangalore, set out from Bangalore early in the morning and arrived at Somanathapura Government School, the site of the camp at around 10:00 am. The Village is 148 Kilometers from Bangalore City towards Devanahalli.

Once there, the team began examining patients – who consisted mostly of young children and Adults – to determine the extent of their problems and decide on a possible course of action to correct these problems. Patients were examined by our team of doctors. 

The team distributed Medicines, conducted GRBS Tests and provided Dental Treatments on the Mobile Dental Unit. Around Six Hundred people were examined for various problems. The doctors explained to each patient – and in many cases, parents and other relatives of these patients as well – exactly what procedures needed to be done to cure them. While the team had anticipated a problem in convincing patients of the need for surgery, there did not appear to be any such issue. 

Each person examined was given a diagnosis and a prescription sheet, and some patients were also asked to come into Bangalore for surgeries on a given date.

The camp closed at 3:30 pm, after every single patient had been observed. Fluoride is the main cause in Bagepalli Taluk. Problems caused by fluoride include Dental Fluorosis - a disease of the teeth, weakening of bones and bone loss, bone cancer, kidney problems and hormone disruption.

Patients who require surgery will be treated at hospitals in Bangalore in the near future.

Trinity Care Foundation hopes to build on its successes by organizing such camps soon. This Mobile Health Camp was conducted for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bangalore as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Initiative focusing on Community Health.

Healthy States, Progressive India

NITI Aayog has been mandated with transforming India by exercising thought leadership and by invoking the instruments of co-operative and competitive federalism, focussing the attention of the State Governments and Union Ministries on achieving outcomes. As the nodal agency responsible for charting India’s quest for attaining the commitments under the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it was necessary to devise a mechanism for measuring outcomes particularly in the critical social sectors – such as Health and Education, where India’s record has been less than stellar. This was intended to provide feedback to all stakeholders as to whether we are on course to what we have set out to achieve, and deviations, if any, to be pointed out in time to  ensure necessary mid-course correction.

It is important to realize that implementation of social sector programs is squarely in the domain of the State Governments and India’s achievement of SDGs is therefore critically dependent on the action in the States. Nudging States towards improving their social outcomes therefore requires developing indices that would capture annual increments in performance through an independent third party process and publish these. It is true that summarizing the complexities of a given sector and condensing it in an Index has its own limitations. However, in an environment where the focus is on budget spends and outputs with limited attention on outcomes, there is a need to increase competition among States to encourage them to strive evermore for increasing the pace of change.

The Health of its population is central to a nation’s well-being and productivity. While India has made some significant gains in improving life expectancy and reducing infant and maternal mortality, our rates of improvement have been inadequate as a nation.

Further, there are large variations in health system performance and outcomes achieved across States. The “Performance in Health Outcomes” Index seeks to capture the annual progress of States and Union Territories (UTs) on a variety of indicators – Outcomes, Governance and Processes. While we have also reported the overall levels of performance of States, the focus of the NITI Index is to propel change, highlighting those States that have shown most improvement. The exercise has been spearheaded by NITI Aayog in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, with technical assistance from the World Bank, the authors of this report on the ranks and their interpretation.

The exercise, which is the first of its kind attempted by the Union Government was conducted over a period of eighteen months. In addition to the technical expertise of the World Bank, experts in public health, economics, statistics and health systems were consulted in the development of the Index. It involved extensive engagement with the States for finalization of the indicators, sensitization workshops for sharing the methodology, process of data submission and addressing concerns; mentoring of States for the data submission process on an online portal and independent data validation.

The process of Index development and implementation highlighted the large gaps in data availability on health outcomes.The need for making outcome data available for smaller states, more frequent and updated outcomes for non-communicable diseases and financial protection, and the need for robust programmatic data that can be used for continuous monitoring, were important issues that despite our efforts, could not be addressed optimally in this first round. Despite these challenges and limitations, it was decided to launch the Index in the first year as a model to measuring performance and ranking States on change. We thereby hope to spur action on several fronts in bringing about national level transformation. We will strive to address the lessons learned in this first round and refine the Index in the successive years of its implementation. The linking of the Health Index with incentives under the National Health Mission by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare underlines the importance of such an exercise. It re-emphasizes the move towards performance based financing for better outcomes.

Great Future Ahead for Nitesh

When Shardhamma gave birth to her only child, Nitesh, she felt shocked and confused. She had never heard about or seen a cleft lip before. Luckily, Shardhamma learned about our program at Chikkaballapura Government Hospital in Karnataka State, India from a friend and travelled two hour and a half to seek treatment for Nitesh.

According to Shardhamma, “this program was helpful to me because I came here when she was only three days old and I was able to receive a lot of information. Also seeing pictures of other children who have the same condition helped me accept it more.”

Nitesh has received lip surgery and nutrition counseling from our team in Bangalore, India. In a few months, he will also undergo a cleft palate surgery.

Meet Chamanthi From Andhra Pradesh

Chamanthi was born with a cleft lip and cleft palate in December 2014. she is the only child of Mr. Venkataiah, 27, and Mrs. Pushpa, 20. The family is from Anatapur district, Andhra Pradesh State, India where Chamanthi father works as a labourer. They travel 245 kilometers to access cleft care from our partner at Mallige Hospital.

In December, Chamanthi was scheduled to have her cleft lip repaired. Unfortunately, She came down with a cough and the surgery had to be rescheduled, but as of January, she was able to have her lip repaired. When Chamanthi reaches 1.5 years old in this year, she will be able to have her palate repair surgery as well.

In the coming days, Ashwani's cleft palate surgeries will be performed and this will transform her life. Prof. Dr. N Srinath is the chief consultant surgeon for Trinity Care Foundation.

What is a Cleft ? | Impact or Value Creation ?

A cleft lip (CL) is a separation in the upper lip. A cleft palate (CP) is an opening in the roof of the mouth. Clefts result from incomplete development of the lip and/or palate in the early weeks of pregnancy. During this time the face is being formed - the top and the two sides develop at the same time and grow towards each other, finally fusing in the middle. The lip and primary palate develop at 4 to 6 weeks of gestation, while the secondary palate develops at approximately nine weeks.

What can be done ?

Cleft lip and cleft palate are correctable birth defects. Treatment of cleft begins within months of birth with corrective surgery, and continues in one form or another until the person reaches their late teens.

Primary surgery begins with the lip repair at about 3 or 4 months and palate repair between 6 and 12 months. Cosmetic surgery on the nose may occur before the child attends school. A corrective rhinoplasty may be performed on the nose in the teenage years. Orthodontic surgery begins with maxilla expansion at around 9 to 10 years followed by bone grafting. Further corrective surgery (an osteotomy) may be carried out at about 18 years.

Cleft lip and palate treatment involves a multidisciplinary team including a plastic surgeon, ENT surgeon, maxillofacial surgeon, orthodontist, and speech and language therapist.

Transforming smiles of underprivileged children with Facial Deformities

Face Defects also known as Facial Deformities are deformities in the growth of the skull and facial bones. These are congenital deformities (present at birth) and can be corrected by reconstructive surgery.

Cleft Lip and Palate

Cleft lip and cleft palate are birth defects that affect the upper lip and roof of the mouth. They happen when the tissue that forms the roof of the mouth and upper lip don't join before birth. The problem can range from a small notch in the lip to a groove that runs into the roof of the mouth and nose. This can affect the way the child's face looks. It can also lead to problems with eating, talking and ear infections.

Treatment usually is surgery to close the lip and palate. Doctors often do this surgery in several stages. Usually the first surgery is during the baby's first year. With treatment, most children with cleft lip or palate do well.

Cleft Lip

Cleft lip (split of the upper lip) is a common congenital deformity. It occurs when the separate areas of the face that develop individually and then join together, do not join properly. Cleft lip is a separation of the two sides of the lip and often includes the bones of the maxilla and/or the upper gum.

Outreach Health Programme in Madhakavarapalli Village

On the 17th of November 2012, Trinity Care Foundation conducted a free medical camp in Madhakavarapalli Village in the Government School in Bagepalli Taluk,Chickaballapura District, Karnataka, India.

This medical camp aimed at providing basic healthcare services focusing on Orthopedics, Gynecology, Dermatology, Diabetology, Cardiology, Dentistry,Pediatrics & Ophthalmology. Basic Medicines were provided free of cost.

The Organization worked in conjunction with government health officials, Gram Panchayath Members and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited members in order to organize this event. Health Workers workers from villages were directed in advance to escort patients to this camp. In order to spread the word about the camp, the foundation organized press releases in local newspapers and also put up advertisement posters in and around the village. Additionally local help was taken to cover the event.

A team of 27, including 14 Doctors as well as observers from HAL, Bangalore, set out from Bangalore early in the morning and arrived at Madhakavarapalli Village Government School, the site of the camp at around 10:30 am.The Village is 145 Kilometers from Bangalore City towards Devanahalli.
Once there, the team began examining patients – who consisted mostly of young children and Adults – to determine the extent of their  problems and decide on a possible course of action to correct these problems. Patients were examined by our team of doctors.

The team distributed Medicines, conducted GRBS Tests and provided Dental Treatments on the Mobile Dental Unit. Nearly Three Hundred and Fifty Three people were examined for for various problems. The doctors explained to each patient – and in many cases, parents and other relatives of these patients as well – exactly what procedures needed to be done to cure them. While the team had anticipated a problem in convincing patients of the need for surgery, there did not appear to be any such issue.

Each person examined was given a diagnosis and a prescription sheet, and some patients were also asked to come into Bangalore for surgeries on a given date. The camp closed at 3:30 pm, after every single patient had been observed. Fluoride is the main cause in Bagepalli Taluk. Problems caused by fluoride include Dental Fluorosis - a disease of the teeth, weakening of bones and bone loss, bone cancer, kidney problems and hormone disruption. Patients who require surgery will be treated at hospitals in Bangalore in the near future.

Trinity Care Foundation hopes to build on its successes by organizing such camps soon.This Mobile Health Camp was conducted for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL),Bangalore as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) focusing on Community Health.
